India - The Purpose

We are in India!! This has got to be one of the craziest places I've ever been to. We have done so much in the 3 days I've been here and I will blog about that later. But first I wanted to remind everyone why I am even on this trip.

So far I've been blogging about all the fun things we've been doing and while we are going to take advantage of the fact that we are on this side of the world to ride elephants and see the Taj Mahal, I want to make it clear that that is not my purpose in going on this trip.

My purpose in being here in India is to serve those who are at a severe disadvantage. Those who have been unable to help themselves due to the way India views and treats them.

I know that I will leave with a love for these people and this country. Despite the craziness and dirtiness - this country has a beauty that may take a little more digging to find than others. But just in the couple of days I've been here, I can tell that my love is already growing for these people.

Being among these people is so humbling. And I haven't even seen the worst of it yet. That is mind blowing to me. The way these people live is just unlike anything I have ever seen.

It is heartbreaking to watch children beg for food and money. You want so badly to just give them something, but you know that all that does is encourage them to beg - which is exactly one of the things Rising Star is trying to teach them not to do.

The people here are beautiful and sometimes you feel like you can just look right into their souls through their eyes. Everyone you meet has a story and I can't wait to learn the stories of those we will meet at Rising Star and look into their eyes.

Will I continue to blog about all the fun and interesting things I'm doing here? Yes! Of course. This blog is about my whole experience and a travel blog as well as a Rising Star journal. Seeing the beauty of this country and the other places I will visit is a part of this experience as well.

But always remember that the reason I'm here is not to see the Taj Mahal - but to see the people of India and help those that I can.

This journey is about serving and loving. That's it.

Chiang Mai - Elephant Love

Myra really wanted to ride an elephant and I really wanted to ride an elephant on its back. Not on those chair things they put on Elephant backs (which I actually did in Thailand 3 years ago). So we found a place and booked an elephant camp tour.

Best day EVER! No other way to describe it! It started with a fab breakfast from out wonderful little hotel.

After breakfast, we got picked up by our guide at our hotel and headed north of Chiang Mai. We first stopped at an orchid farm...

These are pieces of Jewelry made with actual Orchids (so they say)...

Our guide then took us to a local market and walked us through it showing us all the different things they eat....

Like roaches or whatever these things are and grasshoppers (yum).... (No, I did not try it).

Chicken legs and feet....

Bee larva... Doesn't this look appetizing? Who knew people eat this stuff!?!!

And delicious fruit. This I did eat. I ate it the last time I was in Thailand and and definitely wanted more this time! So good!

Lychee Fruit! Also good!

Our guide bought us some fried bananas to try. They were really good! I love trying food... I felt like if i was going to eat street food anywhere on this trip, it should be Thailand. :)

and we bought a couple of coconuts to feed the elephants (but not before drinking the coconut water out of them, of course!:)

We got to the elephant camp and were told to put on traditional mahout style clothing so that we wouldn't get our own clothes dirty. Then we were introduced to these amazing elephants!

There were 6 of them at the camp. And I loved all of them! Our guide taught us different commands (how to tell them to go forward, backwards, sidewards, and to stop) because we would be riding them later.

But first he wanted us to "make friends" with the elephants by feeding them bananas. We could put the bananas in their trunks or directly into their months on their tongue.

Before you knew it, we were fast friends! :) They were wrapping their trunks around us and loving us (or maybe it was the fact that we had bananas in our hands :)

Either way - It was awesome! This is the littlest elephant of the bunch. She is a teenager and she was so much fun to feed. She knew a command to "speak" for bananas. At one point she had wrapped her trunk all around my arm that I was afraid she might squeeze too hard trying to get the banana! But my arm was fine. She is a cutie! We loved her..

This is Rumetip (sp?) - The elephant we would be riding! He's the biggest of the group and we found out later a very hungry elephant who always wants to eat!

Getting on the elephant with no stool or anything to step on was quite the task! ha. The elephant will stick out his leg for you to step on and then you have to pull yourself over the elephant. I needed a little help as you can see.... :)

It was such an amazing feeling to be on this elephants back and giving it directions to go forward, left, right, etc... It didn't even come close to comparing to the last time I was on an elephant in Thailand.

If you ever want to ride an elephant - this is the way to do it. You really get to learn so much about the elephant. If you can see the other people in the background of this picture - they are going on a ride through the jungle but on a chair and the elephants Mahout is controlling where they go.

Myra and I were the only ones riding the elephant on its bareback at the camp. And everyone that came were taking pictures of us because they were fascinated and jealous. What they were doing just didn't compare to sitting on the back of an elephant with his ears flapping against your feet.

After we were trained on how to ride the elephant, we took a break for some lunch.

Then we got back on Rumetip (one in the front and one on her back) and took about a 1 hour ride in the jungle. We took turns being the one in the front and giving directions. We found out quickly that Rumetip likes to eat. She kept going towards the fruit and trees and we kept getting whacked by branches! :)

We rode through the jungle, under banana trees and all sorts of things! It was beautiful! When we were riding in the front there were times that rumetip would do something crazy and we were scared to fall off. At one point she grabbed a large branch from a tree above us and tried to break it off. It basically fell on us and I thought for sure we were going to get wrapped up in it and fall off or something. But we wiggled out way out! She definitely took us on an adventure!

After the jungle walk, we took Rumetip to the water to wash her off. We poured a bunch of water on her and scrubbed her off!

Our guide has been taking pictures of all this stuff and was supposed to put it on a DVD for us to take with us...but he accidentally left his camera at the camp. He said he would email us the pics but I'm a little worried we will never see those. :(

But at least I have these pictures! And some even better memories! This was seriously one of the best days ever! I can't help but love these elephants!

Chiang Mai - Hitchin' Rides and Banana Pancakes

Have I mentioned that I love Thailand?

After sleeping in the airport Saturday night, we took an early flight to Chiang Mai Sunday morning. We landed, took a taxi to our hotel, threw on a skirt and headed towards church. We walked in the general direction, through some random streets and hoped we'd find it. Myra was nervous we wouldn't make it...But we turned the corner and there was a sign pointing the direction to it and a Thai girl walking dressed up with an Ensign in hand.

It was fun going to church in Thai. They had headsets and the missionaries translated for us. They gave us English hymn books so that we could sing along. Everyone was very nice and the spirit was definitely there in that meeting.

After sacrament meeting, we were starving so we walked down the road and found this cute Cafe - Dada Cafe. I ordered some Pad Thai and of course more mango sticky rice...and smoothie!

XXX

We wandered around Chiang Mai for a bit. Stopping in several of the temples they have throughout the city...

Lots of Buddhas...

\

Lots of Monks....

On our way back to the hotel we got more smoothies..... So delicious, but this might have been overdoing it! :)

We got back to our hotel and we were planning on changing and then making out way up to Doi Suthep. A temple up the mountain in Chiang Mai. There were a couple of guys at the hotel just checking it out so we asked them to take our picture in front of our cute hotel....

I asked them what the best way was to get up to the temple. Before I knew it they were offering us a ride on their motorbikes since they were going to head that way anyway.

So.... we got changed and hopped on the back of their motorbikes and headed up the mountain with them.. I grabbed on tight to this strangers waist and off we went! It was SO much fun!

This is Will- the guy whose waist I was holding on to for dear life. He and his friends live in Thailand and teach English. I'm kind of jealous of them.... We talked the whole way up the mountain and it was fun to hear about life in Thailand.

It was raining pretty much the whole ride up which made the roads a little slippery. But they were really safe (minus the whole no helmet part). We made it up in one piece! So nice of them to offer to do that. They headed on their way and we went up the elevator to the Temple. This temple:

The view. Which cleared up right before we were about to go back down the mountain. Chiang Mai is so beautiful!!!

Inside the temple. Reminded me of some of the temples I went to in Bangkok a few years ago. Just not as big. And much prettier surroundings.

X

Kinda how I was feeling after traveling for 36 hours straight and walking around alllllll day!!!

XX

We took a taxi back down to Chiang Mai. The cutest little family shared the mini bus taxi with us. They were so sweet. They kept feeding us corn and peanuts and we tried communicating with their broken English.

XX

The taxi dropped us off by the night market!!! This market was massive! It went on and on and on! I'm not exaggerating one bit! Myra and I thought we would never make it out.

XX

But they did sell some amazing Banana pancakes.....

XX

which we definitely tried! So delicious! :)

XX

On a Tuk Tuk back to our hotel.... we look happy (and we were) -- but really we were just SO exhausted and happy to be going back to our hotel to sleep!!!

XX

It was a busy... but perfect first day in Thailand!!!

Update

So... I've been writing blog post on my ipad offline...but since I've been in India, I haven't found any wifi yet to connect it to! Don't worry though - it's coming!

Just to give you a little update... we spent 2 days in Chiang Mai and yesterday we flew to New Delhi. We are actually in Agra right now and just got back from seeing the Taj!!! So amazing!

This country is insane. There is just no other way to put it! Amazing - but insane. Hopefully our hotel in Varanasi tomorrow will have wifi so I can post those blog posts I have saved!

Welcome to Thailand! I love this place!

This right here is one of the many reasons I love Thailand. The food.. Especially the fruit. Mango and sticky rice and a Mango deliciousness drink. (Mike... I know you are so jealous right now! :)

And who wouldn't love soup out of a fresh coconut. So yum!

We had a long journey to Thailand. 10.5 hour flight to Tokyo. About a 4 or 5 hour layover and then about a 7 hour flight to Bangkok. We got to Bangkok at 11pm. And our next flight was at 6:40am to Chiang Mai so we decided to just stay at the airport. We decided to only take our small bags to Chiang Mai so we put our big bags at the baggage storage and got some food (pics above), tried to take a nap on a bench and then got on our next flight to Chiang Mai!

We've only been here an hour..but are so happy we came. After about 36 hours of travel...there isn't a place I'd rather be. I just love Thailand!

We are packed and ready to go!!! India, here we come!

Our first stop is Bangkok where we will take a quick trip up to Chiang Mai before we head on towards India!

Packing was stressful but I think I have everything I need. The last thing I grabbed was the Malaria pills. Almost forgot them! Yikes!

It's time for 21.5 hours of travel time to Bangkok!

Thank You!

I just wanted to thank all those who have been so generous and have donated to Rising Star to help their efforts in India working with those affected by Leprosy. I feel very blessed to have so many wonderful people in my life who would be so willing to contribute on my behalf. I can not thank you enough.

I leave for Asia on July 1st!! Only 2 weeks left and I have lots to do to get ready! I got a notice from the India Embassy that my passport is ready so I'll be picking that up this week. I also got all my shots up to date and got a prescription for Malaria prevention medication.

Now I need to start tackling that packing list Rising Star sent me to make sure I have everything on it... including insect repellent, toilet paper, lice shampoo (they said "just in case"), grubby work outfits.
