Day 3 - Medical

Today we had to leave early to go with the medical team to The hospital in Chennai with some of the leprosy patients and a few of the children. If leprosy patients do not have someone with them at the hospital, they will be ignored. So they matched us up with a patient.

( in one of the waiting rooms)

Myra and I were asked to escort Pitchai around the hospital. He had to get his eyes checked by the doctor. We went to check him in and waited with him. I tried to keep track of his folder. Some doctors or nurses came by and read it and then put it down. It seemed like maybe they were choosing other patients first. So When they came again Myra said, "it's his turn next?!" pointing to the folder. And the doctor hesitated and then said yes. And called Pitchai's name.

The doctors kept sending us to different rooms and there was lots of waiting in between. Turned out that Ptichai needs cataract surgery so we had to go get some blood work done. It was all a little confusing and we couldn't find anyone to ask questions to which was somewhat frustrating. But we figured it out eventually.

Pitchai... Waiting after receiving eye drops.

Despite the frustrations at the hospital, I really enjoyed the chance we had to help Pitchai. As we sat with him in the hospital, I realized how easy it is to love these people. I don't know them at all and since he doesn't speak English and we don't speak Tamil - we couldn't really say a whole lot to each other.... But yet, I found myself really caring for this man and wanting him to feel like he was just as important as the other patients. As we said goodbye to him we shook his hands (which had stubs for fingers) and he said Thank You over and over. It was just wonderful to be able to spend a few hours with him today.

This trip to the hospital also helped remind me of how blessed we are to live where we live. We do not have to travel 2+ hours to find a hospital. And our hospitals are clean and the equipment is up to date. We are just really blessed with everything that we have and to live in the Countries we live in.

Count your blessings.
