Myra and I walked over to him to talk to him and he kept telling us his English name was Norman. And get raising his hands up in the air and looking up and saying "hallelujah!" He was so happy. Such a joyful man! He kept touching our faces with his little hands. He would sing and even did what sounded to me like a little beat-boxing. It was awesome! We loved it.
Before we left, we touched our heads like he was blessing us. He was just such a joy to be around. So happy!
He seemed so happy to see us! He sang, held our hands, thanked us. And we loved him. It was only as we were walking away that Derek told us his miracle. We never would have known - but Karu Paiya was once blind and very unhappy. He was blind for 20 years.
Leprosy is a desease that attacks nerves that are close to the skin. It can cause eye lids to stop functioning which then causes dust and particles to get into their eyes which will eventually lead to cataracts and other eye damage. So, it is quite common for Leprosy patients to have problems with their eyes!
KaruPaiya was very sad and depressed when he was blind because he couldn't see his children; he had never seen his grandchildren. And he just wanted to die. The doctors refused to operate because there was a big risk that he would not survive the operation.
Finally, a doctor from rising star took him to the hospital and told the doctors, "Look - if he has the operation and he dies; he'll be happy. If he has the operation and he can see; he'll be happy!" So, the doctors finally agreed to operate.
And how happy he was when he woke up and he could see his grandchildren for the first time! Ever since his operation he sings Hallelujah praises! He is so happy and spreads joy to whoever he meets! Every volunteer that meets him, can't help but have a smile on their face after meeting KaruPaiya - Including me!! :)
hallelujah!!!!!
